Beyond the Mean Gender Wage Gap: Decomposition of Differences in Wage Distributions Using Quantile Regression
نویسنده
چکیده
Using linked employer-employee data, this study measures and decomposes the differences in the earnings distribution between male and female employees in Germany. I extend the traditional decomposition to disentangle the effect of human capital characteristics and the effect of firm characteristics in explaining the gender wage gap. Furthermore, I implement the decomposition across the whole wage distribution with the method proposed by Machado and Mata (2005). Thereby, I take into account the dependence between the human capital endowment of individuals and workplace characteristics. The selection of women into less successful and productive firms explains a sizeable part of the gap. This selection is more pronounced in the lower part of the wage distribution than in the upper tail. In addition, women also benefit from the success of firms by rent-sharing to a lesser extent than their male colleagues. This is the source of the largest part of the pay gap. Gender differences in human capital endowment as well as differences in returns to human capital are less responsible for the wage differential. JEL Classification: J16, J31

Is There a Glass Ceiling in Sweden?
Using data from 1998, we show that the gender log wage gap in Sweden increases throughout the wage distribution and accelerates in the upper tail of the distribution, which we interpret as a glass ceiling effect. Using earlier data, we show that the same pattern held at the beginning of the 1990’s but not in the prior two decades. Further, we do not find this pattern either for the log wage gap...
متن کاملThe Gender Pay Gap in Vietnam, 1993-2002: a Quantile Regression Approach
This paper uses mean and quantile regression analysis to investigate the gender pay gap for the wage employed in Vietnam over the period 1993 to 2002. It finds that the Doi moi reforms appear to have been associated with a sharp reduction in gender pay gap disparities for the wage employed. The average gender pay gap in this sector halved between 1993 and 2002 with most of the contraction evide...

Rising Wage Inequality, the Decline of Collective Bargaining, and the Gender Wage Gap This paper investigates the increase in wage inequality, the decline in collective bargaining, and the development of the gender wage gap in West Germany between 2001 and 2006. Based on detailed linked employer-employee data, we show that wage inequality is rising strongly – driven not only by real wage increa...
متن کاملThe Gender Wage Differentials among Rural-Urban Migrants in China∗
This paper analyzes the gender wage disparities among rural-urban migrants in urban China using a nationally representative data set. On average, female migrants earn only 66% of their male counterparts’ average hourly wage. And the gender wage gap is not uniform across migrants’ wage distribution with differentials much higher at the top end than at the bottom and the middle. The mean decompos...
متن کاملGlass Ceilings in Portugal?: An Analysis of the Gender Wage Gap Using a Quantile Regression Approach
Despite the evidence of female progress with regard to women’s role in the labor market, gender inequality remains. Women are still less likely to be employed than men, occupational gender segregation continues, and females continue to earn less than males. The gender wage gap remains wide in several occupational sectors, among which is the information technology (IT) sector. This paper focuses...
